Insomnia Treatment Requires Long-Term Commitment

October 11th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Insomnia isn’t an ailment in most cases. It is a symptom of another medical problem. This is how it should be treated. You can go to any drugstore and buy many over-the-counter medications. These medications will work for the short term as a quick fix to fall asleep. The problem with many of these products are the side effects after more than a few days usage. The continued usage of these products can cause other health problems.

The majority of over the counter insomnia treatment products are not intended for long-term use and they can interfere with your daily activities by not allowing you to have a full night of restful sleep. Some of the common side effects of an over the counter insomnia treatment include dizziness, forgetfulness, constipation and dry mouth and throat. For the most part they include antihistamines typically used for treatments of allergies which do cause drowsiness.

Extended use of any drugs as an insomnia treatment may cause the development of drug tolerance, requiring a larger dose to have the same effect, and it may also cause a dependency on the sleep aid. Some sleeping pills may also have a negative drug interaction with other drugs and after long-term use may cause withdrawal symptoms when their use is ended.

Learns Ways To Help You Improve Sleep

If stress is causing your sleep loss, finding ways to deal with the stress will offer more in the way of insomnia treatment than sleeping pills will offer. If suffering from pain, finding ways to relieve the pain will help you get to sleep than sleeping pills. Your sleep will probably be interrupted during the night when the effects of the sleep aid wears off.

Make your environment more conducive to sleep such as dark curtains over the windows if your schedule calls for going to bed before it gets dark. Most insomnia treatment suggestions are for occasional issues and revolve around changes in lifestyle such as avoiding alcohol before going to bed as well as caffeine or food and drinks that may cause indigestion. Any external causes for insomnia should be examined and eliminated to work as long-term insomnia treatment instead of a short-term fix with drugs.

People also suffer from a sleep-wake reversal. If they have been traveling or have switched normal working hours during the traditional day shift. Sometimes all the person needs to do to reset their internal circadian clock is to work under bright lights for the daytime hours and go to bed in the dark. Oft times, this is all the insomnia treatment needed to get back to a regular sleep schedule.

Good health and much sleep

The Hidden Dangers Of Insomnia Meds

September 30th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Drugs or meds can help cure different kinds of ailments and many of us rely on meds to cure themselves. These meds come with side effects. Over the last few years, several studies have pointed out the hidden dangers of insomnia meds.

Many of these studies show that insomnia meds can cause drug induced stupors. The people who are taking these medications often find it difficult to concentrate on what they are doing. Many cases of driving while sleeping are directly related to insomnia meds. This is why there are now some people who question the appropriateness of prescribing insomnia meds to some people, especially to children and adolescents.

Aside from driving while sleeping, insomnia meds are found to cause hallucinations and nightmares among people who are taking them. Some of these nightmares can be quite violent. The violent nightmares resulting from the insomnia meds can cause severe jolts, so severe that the user wakes up screaming and sweating.

Another hidden danger in taking insomnia meds is that your body may develop immunity to these drugs. Once your body becomes immune to the drugs, you will need to increase the doses to achieve the desired effect. Some people who are desperate to get some sleep tend to double or triple their doses of sleeping pills just to get some rest.

The danger here is that some people often overestimate their capacity to handle the drug to the extent that they end up in a drug induced coma. There have been many reported cases of people dying in their sleep after they have accidentally taken an overdone of sleeping pills.

Should We Avoid Using Insomnia Meds?

Although there are some sectors that insist on the use of natural treatments for insomnia, some people who are chronic insomniacs simply can no longer sleep without the help of insomnia meds. For people who are really having that much trouble getting some sleep, insomnia meds may be the only answer.

Doctors who prescribe sleeping pills to their patients need to make certan that the patient understands the instructions. Patients need to be warned that they need to take the insomnia meds properly to avoid accidents. The patient should be monitored by family members or other people living with them to make sure the patient is sticking to the original dosage.

Understanding the causes of insomnia can help you address the problem better. Insomnia can be caused by many things. It may be due to psychological, physical and emotional causes according to experts. Causes of insomnia vary from one person to another so there is a need to look deeper into the real reason for the lack of sleep.

Psychological Causes Of Insomnia

According to experts, stress, anxiety and depression are some of the leading causes of insomnia are the country today. People who are psychological disturbed often find it difficult to focus their attention on things and may not be able to sleep at night. In most cases, financial worries, fear, worry and uncertainty keep people up all night. If you are one of those people who often lay awake for hours in bed worrying about a lot of things, you need to address this issue immediately.

Take a closer look into the things that are bothering you and find solutions to these problems. If you think that your problem is too big for you to handle, try to breakdown your problems into small components and start solving your problems. For instance, if the cause of your insomnia is financial in nature, evaluate your financial position and come up with a good budget that will allow you to settle some of your debts and still be able to meet your daily needs.

If things are too complicated for you to handle on your own, ask somebody to help you come up with some solutions to your financial problems so that you will have some peace of mind and sleep soundly at night.

Physical Causes Of Insomnia

Physical pain and other forms of discomforts can keep you up all night. To help you sleep soundly at night, understand your body well. For instance, if you are one of those women who usually have premenstrual syndrome, seek medical advice on how to deal with this condition so that you will not end up lying awake all night feeling miserable. On the other hand, if you are in constant pain due to some injuries, ask your doctor for some medication to manage your pain.

Emotional Causes Of Insomnia

Incidents such as relationship break-up or the death of a loved one can bring about emotional pains that can keep you awake all night. Being part of life, these things can’t really be avoided, we just have to deal with them. Find someone to talk to about your emotional problems and concerns. This can be very liberating. Treating Anxiety and Sleep Disorders

September 20th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Psychological reasons often cause sleep disorders. Many of the reasons are based on anxiety, obsession and compulsion. A person’s worries cause anxiety and sleep disorders. Certain subjects are obsessed about and inadvertantly the person’s subconscious stores these worries which later manifest themselves into a person’s dream and nightmares.

Anxiety is often caused by depression, panic disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Anxiety and sleep disorders often go hand in hand because of the listed factors. People get anxious when they panic or they have just undergone a traumatic experience. They also get anxiety attacks when they can not stop thinking or worrying of several things.

Treatment of Anxiety and Sleep Disorders

Anxiety and sleep disorders have remedies. Panic disorder can be treated with professional help. This kind of disorder can occur at night while you are sleeping and manifest itself as a pounding heart or a sense of panic. Some people appear disoriented when they awake. These can be remedied by making bedtime rituals and putting yourself in a relaxed mood before going to bed. It is also best to try and leave your worries behind and not dwell on them too much. This is one way of getting rid of anxiety and sleep disorders.

Trauma instigated by traumatic events can be overcome but the psychological help you will need must come from you and a professional. While undergoing professional help, you can help yourself by trying to come into terms with what happened and try to get your life back in your control. Anxiety and sleep disorders can be triggered by events that violate us and give us a sense that we are not in control of things.

Obsessive-Compulsive behavior can be a hindrance to a good sleep because the individual continually thinks there is something wrong with either the bed or the room and may even be under the impression that he is being watched. The compulsion that you need to do things like hide under the blankets all the time when you are in bed could upset your sleeping patterns because you are too aware of what is going on in your surroundings. Anxiety and sleep disorders can stem from the obsessive idea that if you sleep something bad will happen or someone might come into the room.

Before you go for a good nights sleep, clear your head of anything pertaining to work and problems. Sleepiness can be promoted with aromatherapy and massage.
